Ransomware is a ransomware program, a type of malware. Ransomware encrypts files and data on victims’ computers and demands payment for the decryption key. As a network worm, Ransomware spreads independently on the Internet and local networks through vulnerabilities in software, especially Windows operating systems.

Other reasons for spreading of ransomware include mistakes made during the configuration and administration of network hardware, spam mailings, and viruses spread in social networks.

Well-known ransomware programs that have harmed Windows users are: WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, and Petya.
